Starting Out As A Writer – 5 Things You Should       Know
    Brit Lunden

The publishing world has been set on its head. With the advent of the self-publishing explosion, everyone and anyone can publish a book on the topic they choose. In the past, one only got to publish once they made it past the slush-pile or if an agent picked them up. Even then, it’s an uncertain future that depends on the sale of your last publication.
Self-publishing makes it possible for anyone to fulfill their dreams of being a published author. There are some things that a person should know before they begin this journey.
One- Don’t quit your day job. With dreams of “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “The Martian” filling an author’s head a newly minted writer thinks that their book will be the one to take off and become that best-selling miracle. Be prepared to put a lot of work in both yourself and your brand for a long time before you see returns on that investment. Writing must be squeezed in the hours of the day, not taken up with your job and your responsibility to support yourself and your family. Be sensible in this new start-up and if you want success, create a realistic strategy to make it work.
Two- Learn about social media. YouTube and author threads on GoodReads are filled with great advice on how to learn to use social media to your best advantage. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram , and SnapChat are free ways to attract people to your books. Don’t mix personal posts and make sure all of your sites are professional and about books.
Three- Create a blog. Be proactive. Invite other authors to be your guest. You can’t hit people over the head with only your books. Showcasing other authors makes you more interesting and potentially widens your audience bringing your books in front of new eyes.
Four- If you’re going to spend any money, invest in capable editing, formatting and a good cover. Nothing turns people off quicker than mistakes. If you can’t afford those things, really try your best to make it as perfect as possible. Put a lot of thought into your cover. It is your book's first impression.
Five- Never say no. Do as many guest posts as you can. Write bloggers in your genre and ask if you can give away a copy of your book for free and write a feature about your brand. Don’t always make it about your book. You are the most interesting aspect of your book and once people get to know you, sales will follow.

Lastly, you may not make the Time’s Best Seller List or sell millions of copies, but you thought it, wrote it and published it. You left a piece of yourself available to anyone who wants to read it. That is permanent and that is amazing.
