Pumpkin Carving Winner and Halloween Memories

Image
I thought you might want to hear a little bit about some of my Halloween memories. Halloween, like other holidays, isn't the same when you are an adult. It's not as fun unless you have kids, but if you are 33 years old it isn't.  Since I have had more hours available in my schedule I have been going through my old boxes. I found some of Halloween memories.  When I was in fourth and fifth grade they had a pumpkin contest. Grades 1st to 5th voted on them.  I was so excited to be able to enter a pumpkin when I was in fourth grade. My mom and I spent hours the night before creating my pumpkin.  My mom is one creative person. We were a great pair.   My first time entering was in fourth grade. I did a spider pumpkin. I still couldn't believe I won first place.  My last year at my elementary school, fifth grade, I entered the contest again because I had so much fun making my pumpkin with my mom. This time we decided to make the pumpkin into a cat. It is hard to see in the phot

Halloween Fun and History

1910s Transcendental Graphics/Getty Images Halloween is fast approaching. When did our traditions of Halloween happen?  Over 2,000 years ago Halloween started in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and northwestern France from an ancient pagan festival celebrated by Celtic people. It marked the beginning of the winter season.  The Christain church started the All Saint's Day which was called All Hallows' Eve later warping into the word Halloween. Trick or Treating was an adult event. People would leave food out on a table as a treat for spirits. In some areas of the United Kingdom and Ireland, people went mumming (parading in masks).  They would go door to door asking for food and drink in return for a performance or song. On November 5, Guy Fawkes Day, people dressed in costume and asking for food or money. The Celts wore animal skin costumes to hide in plain sight in hopes of protecting themselves from the potential evil spirits that may appear during Samhain. If they loo

Greenfield Village Halloween Fun Event

The Greenfield Village's Holiday Evening event is amazing so I couldn't wait for the Halloween Event. I have been to the Village's Holiday Evening two times. There is no words to express how much fun that event is. I have never been to the Halloween event, but if its like the Holiday Event then I will not be disappointed. These events sell out fast so if you want to go you need to get your tickets in advance. You can sign up for the 6:30pm, 7:00pm, 7:30pm, 8:00pm, 8:30pm, 9:00pm, 9:30pm. It seemed you can only be in the park for 30 minutes. I can't walk all of Greenfield Village in 30 minutes. Come to find out they do that so they can spread out the crowd a little. On October 14th at 8:30 pm, a group of my friends and I went to the Greenfield Village's Halloween Evening Event. Parking is a pain. We find if you park in the Henry Ford Museum enterence it is the same distance as if you park in the parking lot on the side of Greenfield Village enterence.  Plus

Halloween Gluten Free List 2018

Recently, I went to the Halloween Night at Greenfield Village. Throughout the park they had treat station which gave out candy. In the hotel, I poured out all the treats I got. Guess what?! All of the candy they gave out I could only have one piece of candy. I am glad I am 32 years old and can deal with the sadness, but if I was little kid I would be crying.  It makes me so frustrated with events like this who don't think about kids with food allergies. There is no reason why they couldn't hand out pencils, pens, history pamphlets about Halloween, Halloween pins etc.  Anyways now that I had my little sputtering. Halloween is a lot of fun except when you have food allergies. I am very proud our society is seeing this and started an awareness program called the Pumpkin Project by putting out a teal colored pumpkin on your front porch. This tells parents the person is handing out non-food items. Our society is slowly understanding food allergies, but it is still easy and
