Greenfield Village Halloween Fun Event

The Greenfield Village's Holiday Evening event is amazing so I couldn't wait for the Halloween Event. I have been to the Village's Holiday Evening two times. There is no words to express how much fun that event is. I have never been to the Halloween event, but if its like the Holiday Event then I will not be disappointed.

These events sell out fast so if you want to go you need to get your tickets in advance. You can sign up for the 6:30pm, 7:00pm, 7:30pm, 8:00pm, 8:30pm, 9:00pm, 9:30pm. It seemed you can only be in the park for 30 minutes. I can't walk all of Greenfield Village in 30 minutes. Come to find out they do that so they can spread out the crowd a little.

On October 14th at 8:30 pm, a group of my friends and I went to the Greenfield Village's Halloween Evening Event.

Parking is a pain. We find if you park in the Henry Ford Museum enterence it is the same distance as if you park in the parking lot on the side of Greenfield Village enterence.  Plus, my handicap sticker came in handy. I can't stress enough to make sure you have enough time to find parking lot because if you are 15 minutes late they will resell your ticket.

We were lucky because it was a very nice evening. It was 52 degrees and partly cloudy.
As we walked into the gates we noticed this huge line. I saw there are other enterence gate lines, so we went into that line and got in quicker.

Photo from Detriot New
They gave us a map and a treat bag. We walk along a path lit by 1,000 hand-carved jack-o-lanterns. There is a variety of storybrook characters such as the Queen of Hearts, Alice, Wizard of Oz, Red Riding Hood and more.   There is craft beers, warm apple cide and fresh doughnuts to purchase. There is skeletons, dancing and singing pumpkins.  New to 2018 you can experience a special effects of the 19th century with a thrilling magic lantern show, and wander through a chilling dreamscape for the imagination in Thomas Edison's Menlo Park.  The path has a variety of acts such The Top Hat Sideshow -- A Carnival Vaudevill Act! This carnival act includes fire and magic tricks.  There is live music, old halloween cartoons being played on a big screen and my favorite the Headless Horseman.

Sadly not all of the houses were lit up or decorated. I felt like it would have been the paths more fun because there was a lot of the path with nothing so it got a little boring. The paths were not well lit up well. The carved lit pumpkins were really cool, but everyone kept tripping over them and strollers kept runing over them and smashing them.
I was really hoping to walk through the park and learn about the history of Halloween through the decades like they do for the Christmas event. There was maybe a couple decoration and characters of the past. Don't plan on going through any of the buildings because they are closed for this event.

You can choose from seven times. They are : 6:30pm, 7:00pm, 7:30pm, 8:00pm, 8:30pm, 9:00pm, 9:30pm.  I would suggest doing the 6:30pm or 7:00pm one becausse you can take your time through the paths and watching the entertainment. We went at the 8:30pm time and had a hard time getting to see everything. Also if you go later in the evening you see less cute carved pumpkins because they have been rolled over and stepped on.

This event is great for kids but don't plan on leaving with a full treat bag. There was only 10 treat stations. They handed out chips, twix, pixy sticks, twizzlers, and starburst. I wish they didn't give out food because there are so many kids now adays with food allergies. It would have been really cool if they handed out like pencils, or small coloring books, etc.

Don't get me wrong there are a lot of a cool decorations and I enjoyed myself. My favorite was the headless horseman and the running carousel with ghosts riding the horses with a strobe light. There was even a phantom of the opera in the church building. There was a lot of opportunities to get some cute pictures with the characters.

There wasn't a lot of food choices. They had hot apple cider and donuts, but there were only one place to get it so the lines were really long. I was really hoping they had some caramal apples.

Tip if you go with a group of friends or family make sure to wear something that only your family or friends know. I went with my mom, and three other friends and we kept loosing each other in the crowd. We yelled "Marco" and "Polo" but then people started yelling out polo so it didn't help us find each other. Bring a good camera that takes great pictures in the dark because it is dark and there is a lot of photo stops.

Halloween Gluten Free List 2018

Recently, I went to the Halloween Night at Greenfield Village. Throughout the park they had treat station which gave out candy. In the hotel, I poured out all the treats I got. Guess what?! All of the candy they gave out I could only have one piece of candy. I am glad I am 32 years old and can deal with the sadness, but if I was little kid I would be crying.  It makes me so frustrated with events like this who don't think about kids with food allergies. There is no reason why they couldn't hand out pencils, pens, history pamphlets about Halloween, Halloween pins etc.  Anyways now that I had my little sputtering.

Halloween is a lot of fun except when you have food allergies. I am very proud our society is seeing this and started an awareness program called the Pumpkin Project by putting out a teal colored pumpkin on your front porch. This tells parents the person is handing out non-food items.

Our society is slowly understanding food allergies, but it is still easy and cheaper to hand out candy. The #1 thing to do to protect yourself and your kids are read labels carefully. If you question some ingredients call the manufacturer. If you still question it after talking to the manufacturer then be safe and not eat it.

Here is a list of 2018 Gluten Free Candy:

  • Regular Airheads
  • Sour Airheads
Airheads have a very clear statement about what products are gluten-free and which are not. They also label on their products that are produced in a facility with wheat because Airheads Xtremes contain wheat and are produced in the same facility.

An Unpresentable Glory by Eleanor Gustafson Book Review

An Unpresentable Glory by Eleanor Gustafson is a heartwarming romance with great twists. It is a fiction story that covers a variety of topics such as mental illness, depression, loneliness. Eleanor K Gustafson gives some history on Native American and Latino.  It shows what being a true Christian is all about. Linda welcomes a total stranger who goes into anaphylactic shock. Linda couldn't leave him on his own so she welcomes this complete stranger into in her house. She allowed him to stay until he was recovered.  Without giving out too much information, Linda learns who this stranger is on TV. Eleanor's characters are well thought out and relatable. She showed what kindness, faith and love looks like.  As a reader, I was able to picture each character clearly. What I love most about this book is Eleanor gave an unbiased look into the political scene and it wasn't a preachy faith-based book. I could see her book being made into a Hallmark channel.  I highly recommend getting An Unpresentable Glory.  The only con about this book is you won't be able to put it down until you finish it.

    Paperback Book & ebook

    Author: Eleanor Gustafson
“I trusted you, and some day, you may know just how much you hold in your hands.” Linda Jensen leads a relatively quiet life in Westchester County, New York, as the owner of a highly-acclaimed garden. Inherited from her parents, the garden is her pride and joy. What is not so joyful is finding a strange man sprawled near her delphiniums! The mysterious man is sick, unable to do anything more than drink water—and beg for secrecy. Ignoring all alarm bells, Linda sees to his needs, but her caring act takes on unexpected significance, an unpresentable glory. Seeds of trust, and perhaps love, are planted in Linda’s garden haven. But as secrets are revealed and scandal hits the headlines, the act of caring for this man threatens to tarnish both of their reputations. Like weeds in Linda’s garden, circumstances threaten to choke out their fledgling relationship, and small moments prove to be the biggest influencers—on a national scale.

My life has been full and rich, a grand mix of tears and laughter
. God has been kind and gentle with me from before I can remember. The gift of writing is just one of many opportunities he has given me to reflect his glory and to bring a ray of light into other people’s lives. By his grace, I am indeed “a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season.” (Psalm 1:3)
What have I done in life? Everything from being a minister’s wife, teacher, musician, writer, and encourager, to horses, building houses, tree farming and making maple syrup – all of which has been helpful fodder for writing fiction. My passion is God and then comes loving people and writing. My favorite books are the Bible, Jane Eyre, and Pride and Prejudice. My music of choice is classical – it feeds my soul. However, wherever worship is going on in whatever musical language, I ’m there—happily.
I have a wonderful family. A little weird, perhaps, but our three children and eight grandchildren remind us that life goes way beyond the making of books. For more on them, see Family.
Ellie’s short stories and articles have appeared in a number of national and local magazines. Her pallet of experiences has helped bring color and humor to her fiction. In many of her stories, Ellie explores the cosmic struggle between good and evil in light of God’s overarching work of redemption.
