Collateral Damage by Lynette Eason Book Review

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Honorably discharged from the Army after an explosion nearly killed her, former military psychiatrist Brooke Adams has set up shop to help others--but her days of helping military personnel are over. She's got her own battles to fight from her time overseas, and she's not equipped to take on more. Former Army Special Ops Sergeant First Class Asher James could handle anything that war sent his way--terrorists, bombs, bullets. The only thing that scares him now is sleep. As the shadows close in, the nightmares begin.

Finally convinced that he needs help, Asher makes an appointment with a counselor, and Brooke is pressed by her boss to take him on. When he arrives at her office she isn't there--but a dead body is. Brooke is devastated when she walks in, and Asher is a conveniently strong shoulder to cry on. But she can't take him on as a client after sharing such an intimate and unprofessional moment, can she? And he's not sure he can handle sharing his deepest fears with such a beautiful woman.

When it becomes clear that Brooke was the real target of the attack--and that her secrets go even deeper than his own--Asher vows to protect her no matter what.

Book Review:

Collateral Damage is the first book in the new romantic suspense series, "Danger Never Sleeps".

This story mainly focuses on Brooke and Asher. The story starts when Brooke and Asher are still serving in Afghanistan. There is lots of traumatic details of bombs, explosions, death and loss  Brooke Adams, a military psychiatrist, left the army. She was stationed in Afghanistan. She comes home and starts practicing again. She struggles with PTSD occasionally.  One morning she walks finds herself finding a veteran, former Special Ops Sergeant First Class Asher James there having found the body in her office.

James Asher met Brooke while in Afghanistan but weren't friends or in contact with each other.  They were not friends.

Trying to overcome her trauma Brooke no longer wants to work with servicemen and women because it causes her PTSD to start up again. Later James Asher steps back into her life. He sought after her because he knew she would understand what he was going through.

Soon it became clear Brooke is the target of the killer and she and Asher are racing to figure out what is truly happening. He really wants to walk away, but made a promise to keep her safe.

These two come together to help stay alive and discover how the current attacks fit in with their pasts.

Both left the military for their own reasons and thought the distance would make everything better, but both had a hard time adjusting to civilian life.

Eason did a great job of blending some intense situations in the story. I loved how the multiple storylines came together to reveal a complex plot. Brooke and Asher didn't get together in the story until the middle of the book. Each character is relatable. The two main characters have wonderful chemistry with each other.  "Collateral Damage"  contains a depth of emotion, grief, loss, and fear that each character faces. Throughout the book, there characters' flashbacks and nightmares. The details and the storytelling was so realistic I thought it was a biography.  This romantic suspense novel is a perfect start to the series, "Danger Never Stop." I can't wait to read more of Eason's books especially the rest of this series.

The publishers provided an advanced reader copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.
